I loved so many things about this book--the characters, the history, and the mystery. This would be a fabulous read aloud or a jumping off place for conversations about racism, family dynamics, and friendship. ...

What a fantastic story of friendship, differences, struggles, and love - with a dash of adventure, mystery, and history. I was so inspired by so many little comments throughout that it makes me want to do more, to inspire others to do better out there in the world. ...

A fantastic puzzle of a book. The author name-checks The Westing Game, and I think the comparison is deserved, though they are very different books overall, the "feel" of the puzzle was similar, along with the necessary suspension of disbelief required to engage in a story where a rich...

This is one of my favorite books of the year. It had everything. The pacing is excellent, he's created characters to care about, and a really hard puzzle to solve. Varian Johnson hit his stride with this story. It's deep and powerful - my opinion anyway. Not all stories that shift back...

Reviewed from ARC provided by Scholastic Okay, I don't know about the rest of you, but this is my pick for Newbery this year. It will take a lot to beat this one for me. It's an awesome mystery, a great friendship and identity story, and a decisive critique of racism in America, all...

The Westing Game is my favorite book of all time and I often hear "This is the NEW Westing Game" when a middle-grade mystery comes out and it never quite lives up to the hype. This one does. It references TWG quite a bit, but goes deeper to explore race and identity. I love that the tw...

This book is so good! The gradually revealed history, the clues, the family relationships...all marvelous. So many references to The Westing Game, which I am ashamed to admit has been on my TBR list for WAAAAAY too long. If you are responsible for buying books for your school library, ...

The mystery here is great, but it's also not the best thing about the book. Johnson does a wonderful job blending past and present, offering personal, regional, and national history to young readers in meaningful and moving ways. ...

4.5 Stars. Terrific puzzle story/mystery with strong social commentary on not only racial issues but also sexual orientation. I enjoyed the references to THE WESTING GAME and the flips from past to present throughout the book. ...

Not sure the tricky aspects of this book work as well as in the Greene books, but the historical love story is sympathetic. Listened to the audiobook which, without spoiling anything, may actually make some details more effective. I?d be curious to see how they were handled in print....

This tightly woven history mystery about a hidden treasure, a devastated family and a new friendship by middle grade maestro Varian Johnson provides a perfect jumping off point for thoughtful conversations about prejudice, family divisions and the long roots of racism. My new favorite ...

I couldn't stop reading this book. Totally enjoyable on different levels. You can read it as a straight mystery and thoroughly enjoy it. The added nuance of the various injustices demonstrated is just another level of expertise from the author. Windows and mirrors in such a subtle way....

I'm not a big mystery reader, so I drug my heels a bit at the beginning of the book. What pulled me in and kept me were the characters, and the way Varian Johnson weaves both historical and current contexts into the story. I definitely have to read The Westing Game now... ...

I enjoyed the references to THE WESTING GAME and the flips from past to present throughout the book. ...
